UNIX file descriptors

Monday, May 5, 20251 min read

  • OS/Linux
  • OS/AIX
  • Language/Bash
  • OS/macOS
  • Standard/POSIX

There are three file descriptors that every application has access to:

  • STDIN — 0
  • STDOUT — 1
  • STDERR — 2

Additional file descriptors can also be created in an ad hoc fashion.
